This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the Architectural Student Design Competition. Since it was announced in 2001, the competition has been challenging students to develop a deeper understanding of steel structures – from structural design to detailing requirements - and applying this knowledge into a realm of a supposed application.
The theme for this year's competition is "Biomimicry - Biomimetisme", where students were to explore biomimicry as it may be expressed in form, surfaces, members and connections, and structural and architectural design and were to provide a solution where a clear incorporation of biomimicry was the basis for structural form.
On June 10th, 2011 the winners of the competition was announced at the SSEF Annual General Meeting in Mont Tremblant, Quebec.

The Award of Excellence goes to:
Justin Lai and Charles Ye, of the University of Waterloo, for their entry entitled 'Amoveo' (shown above); supervised by Terri Meyer Boake and Mark Cichy.
The Awards of Merit go to:
Katherine Holbrook-Smith and Guang Xi (Tony) Shi, of the University of Waterloo, for their entry entitled 'Firefly Pavillion'; supervised by Terri Meyer Boake and Mark Cichy.
Sheelah Tolton and Jeremy Jeong, of the University of Waterloo, for their entry entitled `The Frond-Bicycle Station'; supervised by Terri Meyer Boake and Mark Cichy.
